What happens when you stop rushing through landscapes and start dwelling within them? This question drove our founders to leave conventional tourism behind and develop something different. Not adventure tourism focused on adrenaline, not luxury eco-lodges cushioned from reality, but genuine immersion in wild places.
We established opal-comet in 2008 after spending years as wilderness guides watching travellers transform when given enough time in nature. The hurried multi-destination itinerary never allows that transformation. Only sustained presence does — waking before dawn to watch mist rise from a lake, spending evenings without artificial light, walking until the mind finally quiets.
Modern travel often replicates the pace of daily life. We believe the point is to escape that pace entirely. Our itineraries build in what might seem like excessive time — afternoons with nothing scheduled, mornings without wake-up calls, routes that could be covered faster but gain meaning through deliberate slowness.
Every footprint matters in fragile ecosystems. We practice and teach leave-no-trace principles rigorously, but our commitment extends beyond personal impact. A portion of every booking supports land conservation efforts across Canada, protecting the very places we explore.
We carbon-offset all ground transportation and limit our operations to prevent the environmental degradation that popularity brings to wild areas. Growth is not our goal; sustained quality is.
